In my experience, people tend to have strong opinions about fitness trackers: either they appreciate the opportunity to get insight into their health, or they’re completely against diving into all those numbers. To be honest, I’m somewhere in the middle. I want to know how my body recovered from a stressful day, but I don’t want my wristband vibrating every time I spend an extended period of time slouched at my desk.

I thought the Fitbit Luxe might suit my tastes as a relatively affordable fitness tracker option from a popular brand that has some of my friends and family among its fans. I was also hoping their latest tracker would include adjustable customization options so I could easily zoom in on the data I was actually interested in (read: more insight into my sleep habits, less energy consumption analytics). water). I tested the device to see if that was the case.

How I tested the Fitbit Luxe

Setting up the device needed some troubleshooting, but that was up to me since I hadn’t updated my phone’s OS in ages. Once I figured out the issue with Fitbit’s easily accessible tech support, I set up the device. Then I wore the Fitbit Luxe for seven weeks, keeping it on for sleep, near-daily workouts, and everything in between. I only took it off to take a shower, which, FTR, wasn’t necessary since the device is waterproof to 50 meters (about 165 feet).

In the Fitbit app, you’ll find stats for the day, including four fill-in-time activity similar to what you’ll see on the Apple Watch. The rings correspond to your steps, miles, calories burned and “Active Zone Minutes”, ie the number of minutes you have spent with your heart rate at 111 beats per minute or more. Personally, I found these to be ambitious numbers to aim for – I’ve never been able to close all four rings in a single day – but you can adjust your daily goals to whatever suits your lifestyle. life and your activity level.

Throughout those almost two months, I’ve also had access to features that are only available to premium Fitbit members who pay an annual or monthly premium subscription. Signing up for the premium subscription unlocks information and content, including various additional sleep analytics, a daily readiness score (an indication of how ready your body is for a workout), mindfulness audio clips, virtual walk/run races, stage-based challenges, and recipe videos.

While non-premium users get access to 20 workout videos from Fitbit, Physique57, Daily, etc., a premium membership includes hundreds of workouts. I watched a few stretching videos and listened to a few sleep meditations, but mostly wore my Fitbit Luxe while doing my own workouts. The wearable does a decent job of automatically capturing your activity once you start moving so you don’t have to worry about manually recording them. The Fitbit Luxe, on the other hand, isn’t always accurate at guessing what you were doing. For example, the fitness tracker detected that I was walking or using an elliptical while lifting weights.

The device has additional features that you might be interested in even if you are not interested in recording your exercise. It has a period tracker feature, which informs you of your average cycle length and estimated average ovulation and predicts when your next period will start. With a stress management feature, you have the ability to enter how you feel on a scale from very calm to very stressed at any time of the day. I logged my stress level multiple times, including when I felt unusually zen after a morning meditation or overwhelmed with my to-do list. This gave the device the touchpoints it needed to start providing a daily stress management score, letting me know how well my body recovered from stress on any given day based on changes in my heart rate, my physical activity and my sleeping habits. You can also use the Fitbit Luxe to log your weight and food and water intake, which I didn’t use.

As someone who hates the idea of ​​a tracker clashing with my outfit, I appreciated that there were plenty of Fitbit Luxe replacement bands available, both from Fitbit and third-party brands. I alternated between the included silicone strap, which allowed me to pair with my co-worker, and a silver stainless steel strap which I thought was more suited to dressier attire. What sets the Fitbit Luxe apart from other trackers

Considering the relatively low price of the device, I was surprised by the number of features it includes, although most require a paid subscription. You can really get granular with tracking and analyzing your health metrics, looking at how your resting heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and heart rate variability (HRV) change over time. time. I imagine this level of detail could be useful for an athlete who wants to optimize their training and recovery, although I personally find the overall readiness score (which is informed by your activity, sleep and HRV) to be sufficient .

Fitbit’s approach to sleep reporting is unique in that it pairs you with one of six animals based on your sleep style over the month. Although I’m a turtle since I spend a lot of time in bed, my colleague discovered that she was a giraffe, an animal that achieves the correct ratio of deep and REM sleep, despite having a shorter overall sleep duration, according to the app.

The Fitbit Luxe and other Fitbit devices will also stand out to those who want to use an activity tracker as a pseudo-responsibility companion. Not only can you earn badges for reaching certain milestones, but you can also add friends and create groups with other Fitbit users to send cheers. You’ll find a wider selection of bands than you would with other trackers, ranging from “Stress Less” and “New Moms” to “Vegetarian” and “New York.”

My verdict on the Fitbit Luxe

Thanks to its flexibility, the Fitbit Luxe suited my needs, but I feel like it would also appeal to people who want to rely more on a fitness tracker than I do. You can engage in a premium subscription and register for challenges, track every ounce of water you drink, and find inspiration for recipes. Or, you can focus on closing your rings, focusing on your body as the primary guide for how you structure your activity.
