Another stumbling block for Truth Social: Google prohibits the download of the application in case of violent content

social truth, social media platform backed by former president donald trump, aims to provide an “open, free and honest global conversation”. But one place where potential users won’t be free to access the service is on Google’s Play Store. The internet giant says it does not allow downloads of the app due to violent content.

Google Play’s App Store lets people pre-register for Truth Social, but they can’t yet directly download the service from the site, unlike Apple’s App Store. In a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, Google said it notified Truth Social on Aug. 19 of “several violations of standard policies in their current app submission.”

The problem with Google is yet another stumbling block for Truth Social, which launched earlier this year and has since struggle to find advertisers. The company also reportedly fell behind on payments to one of its suppliers, with Fox News reports that the service owes about $1.6 million to its web hosting service.

The key to the success of the social media platform will be attracting enough users to convince advertisers to pay for promotions. Still, getting the Google App Store snub may limit Truth Social’s ability to gain new members, given that 4 out of 10 mobile phones use Google’s Android platform.

Google said it requires apps to have “effective user-generated content moderation systems” in order to be included in its Play app store, a spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch.

While Truth Social has been available on Apple’s App Store since early 2022, the company only started developing an Android app a few weeks ago. according to the New York Times, which previously reported on the dispute between Truth Social and Google.

Trump Media & Technology Group said in a statement Tuesday that it “has continuously worked in good faith with Google to ensure the Truth Social Android app complies with Google’s policies without compromising our promise to be a safe haven for freedom of speech”. He added that his terms of service have been described as “among the most robust in the industry” by “independent observers”.

“TMTG has no desire to plead its cases in the public sphere, but for the record, responded quickly to all requests from Google,” he added. “We believe that all Americans should have access to Truth Social, regardless of the devices they use.”

Incitement to violence

Violations of Google’s policies on Truth Social include physical threats and incitement to violence, according to the company.

“Last week, Truth Social responded by acknowledging our feedback and saying they are working on resolving these issues,” the Google spokesperson added.

However, last week, Devin Nunes, the former congressman who now leads Truth Social, blame Google for the heist. “I don’t know what’s taking so long,” he said in a video posted by Real America’s Voice.

Nunes’ comments distort the dialogue between companies, according to Google.

Truth Social also faces other obstacles. Earlier this month, the company’s request to file its name was rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which said Truth Social’s name sounded too much like other companies. This could cause consumers to be “confused, deceived, or deceived as to the commercial source of the parties’ goods and/or services,” the agency said.

The company is also facing problems with its merger with a blank check company Digital World Acquisition Corp. (DWAC). Earlier this week, DWAC warned that the company’s success could be tarnished due to “negative reactions to publicity about President Trump”, including if “other controversies” damaged its credibility.

And the DWAC-TMTG combination could be compromised by multiple regulatory investigations, DWAC warned earlier this month in a regulatory filing. He noted that the company “recently received subpoenas from the SEC requesting various documents regarding, among other things, our due diligence regarding TMTG” and that it also received grand jury subpoenas requesting similar information.

Shares of DWAC have fallen more than 50% since the start of the year.
