Apple announcement that starting today, Arizona residents can download their driver’s license or ID card to their digital wallet. This means that travelers from Arizona – the first state with access to this wallet feature – will be able to pass certain TSA checkpoints at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with a simple tap of their iPhone or Apple Watch.

From Tech Crunch:

To get started, Arizona residents will tap the plus “+” button at the top of the Wallet app screen on their iPhone, then choose “Driver’s License or State ID”, and follow the instructions at screen to start the configuration and verification process, explains Apple. The person is verified by taking a selfie and then scanning the back and front of their driver’s license or national ID card. (In other words, it’s not a substitute for getting ID or a license from the DMV to get started.) …

The approval process usually only takes a few minutes, and users will be notified when the ID is available in Wallet, just as they are when adding credit cards.

Once the credential or license is added to Wallet, users will be able to access it for use at supported TSA checkpoints. Users can see what information is requested and then consent to providing the information with Face ID or Touch ID. It works similarly to Apple Pay, which means users don’t have to unlock their iPhone to use the feature. The information is then sent to an identity reader through encrypted communication, after consent has been provided.

Because the information is shared digitally, users won’t have to hand over their physical ID or device, Apple says. The TSA reader will also capture a photo of the traveler for further verification. (This is the digital equivalent of how TSA agents will look at a person’s license and then see their face again to determine if they are in fact the same person.)

The following states inline for Wallet licenses and state IDs include Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, Utah, Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio and Puerto Rico Territory.
