Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) – Uproar over a popular app called “New Profile Pic.” You’ve probably seen your friends posting their painted portraits on social media, but some believe the app has malicious origins.
Online accusations claim the app was created in Russia to harvest sensitive data and information from Americans.
However, the Better Business Bureau said no. They point to an article by Snopes debunking this theory.
“There’s a lot of discussion on social media about different reasons why you wouldn’t want to download the app; but here at the BBB and across the country, we haven’t received any follow-up scam reports that have sparked concerns,” said Angela Guth, President and CEO of BBB SWLA.
Rumors accuse the app of being malware, withdrawing money from accounts or being connected to the Kremlin – all unsubstantiated claims, according to the BBB.
“One of the permissions is that they have access to your photos for two weeks after the app is deleted,” Guth said.
Investigators said after searching the domain on Wednesday, results showed the website was actually registered in Florida. Linerock Investments said no images or user data were sent to Moscow.
So is it safe? Investigators said yes, but it is best to err on the side of caution.
“Just because he’s out there doesn’t necessarily mean he’s trustworthy,” Guth said. “That’s why, as a consumer, whenever you download any type of app, you should always do your due diligence to make sure everything is okay and you’re okay with everything. This is why you must always register and say that I accept this.
