Period tracking apps are one of the most useful innovations that women can take advantage of. It reminds them of their menstrual cycle so they know what actions to take in real time.

However, there are instances where users forget that they should always protect their data while using these menstrual cycles.

As of this writing, Roe v. Wade allows a woman to have an abortion in the United States. But, if that decision is reversed, those who have already had an abortion can be tracked using their period tracking data.

That’s why it’s important to make sure the app you’re using doesn’t store your information.

The Wall Street Journal’s latest report provided some of the best period-tracking apps used around the world, along with the data security features of those apps:

  • Does not have encryption, but uses technical backup functions to protect user data.
  • Uses your data for marketing and targeted advertising purposes.

Index

  • Encrypted but not end-to-end
  • Ensures that your data is not sold to third parties, but can still provide anonymized user information to researchers.

Apple Health

  • End-to-end encryption
  • Has no health data to share, but works with third parties.

Protect your user data

If you still want to use your period tracker app, there are steps you can take to further ensure the security of your personal information.

The Consumer Reports Org blog post provided a few:

  • By using trusted VPNs, tpm protects your online activities from policy tracking.
  • Make sure your emails and text messages are encrypted as some period tracking apps can access them.
  • Rotate your GPS so you can hide your true location.

In July 2019, a new study revealed that menstrual cups are actually as safe and effective as common sanitary products.

In September 2019, experts claimed that menstrual tracking apps were sharing sensitive user data with Meta’s Facebook platform.
