The fragility of the electricity sector in Nigeria requires an inclusive intervention to provide an adequate buffer that will ensure grid stability, say leading electricity experts.

LEADERSHIP findings show that Nigeria’s continuing grid collapse is in part a direct result of the inability of distribution and transmission companies to accurately identify and trace faults and provide real-time intervention and requires therefore the deployment of modern technologies throughout the value chain.

According to experts, the constant network collapse in the system is linked to the inability to adequately monitor distribution and transmission faults.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP on how to curb the frequent grid collapse in the country, the Executive Director, Research and Advocacy of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), Sunday Oduntan, recommended the acquisition of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition-Distribution Management System (SCADA-DMS), which he said has proven to be an effective technology that facilitates real-time fault detection in the energy sector.

Oduntan said that only Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has so far acquired the technology and it is the first functional SCADA-DMS in West Africa.

He said the asset cost the company around 5 billion naira at the time of installation, but could have reached around 8 billion naira given the current exchange rate and inflation.

“For the country to enjoy better services along the value chain, the 11 DisCos must acquire the technology as well as the transmission company, because each segment is linked to the other and any deviation encountered by one affects the rest,” he explained.

LEADERSHIP reports that SCADA is a centralized computer system that tracks power grid operations from physical monitoring, remote coverage and network information relay.

It is one of the most advanced technologies in the power distribution industry and equips DisCos and transmission companies for technical issues and customer complaints.

During the inauguration of the facility by EKEDC, in 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari said his administration was committed to addressing the liquidity challenges that undermine the viability of the power sector, the increased tax burden on the federal government caused by tariff deficits in the sector. which can no longer be sustained.

He said government efforts through the Central Bank of Nigeria Electricity Assistance Fund (CBN-PAF), an initiative to support tariff deficits, can no longer be sustained and must be phased out. removed to promote the financial independence of the sector.

The SCADA-DMS project currently provides access to real-time data that allows distribution system operators to make informed decisions that improve reliability and availability, in line with the objectives of the Service Based Tariff (SBT) regime. .

The project, funded by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through the Nigerian Electricity Market Stabilization Facility (NEMSF), was being implemented in phases through a partnership with Tech Systems Limited and a Canadian-based company, M /S Survalent Technology, a leading reputable technology company in providing SCADA-DMS-OMS solutions.

The long-term grid automation system will strengthen power grid management at Osogbo National Control Center in Osun State to improve the real-time operation of the national power grid.

Nigeria’s power grid has recorded a series of blackouts this year that have plunged many parts of the country into darkness.

To reduce the rate of grid outages, Energy Minister Abubakar Aliyu said the federal government would expedite the purchase and installation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

Electricity generation on the grid continues to fluctuate due to various concerns such as gas constraints, water management issues, and gas pipeline sabotage.

But TCN said Wednesday that its new technology will improve network monitoring and help manage it in the future.

“The deployment of the smart grid system is an advanced step in the procurement process for the deployment of state-of-the-art supervisory control and data acquisition/energy management systems,” said the general manager of public relations. , Ndidi Mbah said:

TCN Director General Sule Abdulaziz said the NCC control room is solely responsible for all activities related to grid network data acquisition, network operation and management in real time for optimal service delivery.

The company said it has accelerated the digitization of network operations.
