Bite counter: Maintaining weight and staying in shape is the greatest challenge of modern human civilization. The most common approach to weight monitoring is to control food intake. However, in the midst of our busy lives, it is very difficult to keep track of our food intake.
There is a much awaited soon from the medical gadget industry to overcome the challenge of keeping a tab on food intake. Researchers at Clemson University in South Carolina, USA, have developed a device model billed as a “food pedometer”. The research was conducted several years ago, however, many entities are working on the development of a working model of the gadget. This device aims to make our life easier because it would eliminate stress and buzz when we eat more than necessary.
An excerpt from Clemson University’s official project description available at https://cecas.clemson.edu/~ahoover/bite-counter/, read: “Isn’t a bite of carrots any different from a bite of candy? Sure. But no one gains or loses weight in one bite, or even in one meal. A common guideline is to lose one pound of weight per week. Our hypothesis is that the number of bites can serve as a proxy for the number of calories over a period of time. By automating the counting process and enabling it anywhere, anytime, the bite counter can allow individuals to better monitor their consumption. As with calories, it is possible to count bites for a single meal; but with either measure, reduction targets are best assessed over at least one day.
Bite goals, like calorie goals, should be personalized for the individual. This would be based not only on the person’s height, gender, age, and activity level, but also on the foods typically eaten. For example, a vegetarian may have a higher number of bites per day than someone who regularly eats more energy-dense foods. Also, people tend to eat the same foods week after week. Therefore, setting bite reduction goals over a period of time has the same effect as setting calorie reduction goals.
How it works
It is expected that the features of the bite counter gadget will be instilled in the smartwatch. It is because of the similar operation and working mode. The bite counter maps the movement of the arm and calculates the gesture of the arm as it moves towards the mouth. It calculates the movement as a “bite” and keeps tabs on it. When the bites exceed a certain level, the gadget warns the user.
How it would make our lives easier
The fitness and medical industry would greatly benefit from the device. Fitness enthusiasts and weight watchers can take advantage of the bite counter and control their calorie intake. It would also be very beneficial for patients who are advised by doctors and health professionals to control their food intake. For anyone else, it’s a great option to monitor the amount of food you eat and be encouraged to follow a healthy diet.
Extensive research and studies have gone into the development of the device and have yielded accurate results. The device looks very promising and fitness enthusiasts are excited for its launch.
However, no official announcement has yet been made by any organization regarding its launch.
